The appointment is occasioned by the appointment of District Judge Bruce Zager to the Iowa Supreme Court.  In accordance with Iowa's merit system for judicial selection, the First District's Judicial Nominating Commission will meet in formal session on Friday, April 29, 2011, to interview the candidates and nominate two of them for the position. The interview portion of the meetings is open to the public. Candidates' applications are available for viewing at:

Iowa's Governor will then select one of them for the judgeship.  

The First District includes Allamakee, Black Hawk, Buchanan, Chickasaw, Clayton, Delaware, Dubuque, Fayette, Grundy, Howard and Winneshiek counties. The Nominating Commission consists of eleven persons from the District, five of whom are elected by the lawyers and five of whom are appointed by the Governor. The longest serving judge is the chairperson.
