- Registration
Deadline, Details and Fees
The
registration deadline for the March 24 and 25, 2012 orientation is Friday, March
16, 2012 by 4:00 pm.
The fee for the orientation program is
$155.00. This fee may be reduced to $100
for interpreters who reside in a county that does not have anyone on the Roster
of Court Interpreters for the non-English language they interpret. The fee includes program attendance and
materials. The total fee is due at the time of registration.
The Iowa Interpreters
and Translators Association (IITA) organize these workshops. Please go to IITA's website to register
and for additional details. Any questions
regarding the orientation program should be directed to IITA.
NOTE: The orientation workshop is a pre-requisite
to taking the written exams for court interpreters, which interpreters must
pass to be listed on Iowa's Roster of Court Interpreters. Interpreters must also pass the written exams
to qualify to take the Oral Interpretation Exams for Court Interpreter
Certification.
Formal court interpreter training is one of the six essential
qualifications for those who want to be listed on the Roster of State Court
Interpreters. To be listed on the
Roster, interpreters must be at least 18 years old and complete the following
steps in this order:
1)
Complete an official
"Application to be an Oral (or Sign) Language Interpreter" and pay
the $25 application fee.
2)
Complete a
"Release/Waiver" form (included in the Application) to authorize
Office of Professional Regulation staff to conduct a criminal history check. Interpreters
cannot have committed a felony or a lesser crime of dishonesty or moral turpitude.
3)
Attend a two-day court interpreter
orientation program approved by the state court administrator.
4)
Pass a written exam on the Code of
Professional Conduct for Judicial Branch Interpreters
5)
Pass an additional written exam (135
multiple-choice questions) covering general English vocabulary and slang, legal
terms, court-related issues, and ethics.
Other Training
Programs
When we become aware of other court interpreter training programs
in Iowa or neighboring states, we will post the information below. The IITA's website is also a good source of
information regarding upcoming training programs. The National
Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators (NAJIT) also conducts
court interpreter training programs in various locations.
- Annual Conference of the Iowa Interpreters
and Translators Association (IITA)
The IITA usually holds its annual conference in Des Moines on the
third or fourth weekend in June. This provides an excellent opportunity for
interpreters to learn from professionals in the field and to network and
socialize with other interpreters from around the state. For more information and to register for the
conference, visit the IITA website.
