STATE OF THE JUDICIARY MESSAGE — JANUARY 14
Des Moines, January 7, 2009— On Wednesday, January 14,
2009, at 10 a.m. in the House Chambers, Chief Justice Marsha Ternus of the Iowa
Supreme Court will address a joint convention of the General Assembly on the
State of the Judiciary. The
chief justice will discuss the most serious
challenges facing Iowa's court system including meeting the needs of self-represented
litigants, reducing the cost of civil litigation, ensuring safe and secure
courthouses, providing equal justice to people who do not speak or understand
English and addressing juvenile delinquency and substance abuse. She will also discuss the impact of
impending budget cuts on the delivery of court services and propose a number of
reforms to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the court system.
