Judicial Branch Media Briefing Regarding Judicial
Branch Budget
Des Moines, February 12,
2009—Iowa Supreme Court Chief
Justice Marsha Ternus and State Court Administrator David Boyd will hold a
media briefing on Thursday, February 19, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. in the Judicial
Branch Building to update the media on the judicial branch budget and the
ramifications of the governor's proposed budget cuts.
Boyd will present
information on a range of possible options for reducing expenses for FY10 and
beyond, including:
·
layoffs of court
personnel
·
making cuts to or
eliminating the senior judge program
·
employee furloughs
·
voluntary furloughs for
judges
·
merging court offices
This information will
include a preliminary analysis of each option developed by the judicial
council.
The supreme court has
decided to examine every option for reducing the judicial branch's operating
expenses. However, the court has made
no decision about any particular cost-cutting measure, and will make no
decisions until after it knows the amount the legislature intends to cut the
judicial branch budget.
