Iowa Court of Appeals Judge John Miller to Retire

Des Moines, June 15, 2009——Iowa Court of Appeals Judge John Miller of Burlington has announced his retirement. Judge Miller, 66, will retire July 23, 2009. He was appointed to the Iowa Court of Appeals in 1999.

"It has been my privilege to serve the people of Iowa as a judge," Judge Miller said. "Our hard-working and dedicated judges and judicial branch employees have made what can be demanding and challenging work a pleasure. I will miss working with them on a daily basis, but look forward to having more time for family, friends, and other pursuits."

Judge Miller's judicial career spans a third of a century, including five years as a part-time judicial hospitalization referee while in private practice from 1975 to 1980, more than eighteen years as a district court judge, including fourteen months as Chief Judge of the Eighth Judicial District, and nearly ten years on the Iowa Court of Appeals. He attended undergraduate and law school at the University of Iowa, receiving his bachelor's degree in 1969 and his law degree, with distinction, in 1975.

During his judicial career Judge Miller served on the Judicial Administration Committee of the Iowa State Bar Association for nearly twenty years and co-chaired its ad hoc judicial plebiscite committee. He was also an active member of the Iowa Judges Association, serving on most of its committees, including three separate terms on its board of directors, where he held each of its offices, including its presidency in 1998-99. Even in retirement, Judge Miller does not plan to end his service to the Iowa Judicial Branch.

"I will apply to serve as a senior judge, and will be happy to continue working for the courts in any way that I can," he said. "I hope to continue to contribute to the courts, and to maintain the relationships established over the years."

Under Iowa law, the vacancy that will occur upon Judge Miller's retirement will be filled by appointment by the Governor from a list of three nominees which will be submitted by the State Judicial Nominating Commission.
