of Appeals Judge Robert Mahan to Retire
Des
Moines, July 22, 2009—Iowa
Court of Appeals Judge Robert Mahan of Ames has announced his pending retirement.
Judge Mahan, 62, will retire July 31, 2009.
Judge Mahan's
was appointed to the court of appeals in 1997. His judicial career spans 31
years including eight years as a district associate judge, eleven years on the
district court bench, and twelve years on the Iowa Court of
Appeals.
"It has been
my absolute pleasure to serve as a judge in the State of Iowa," Judge Mahan
said. "I will miss the daily contact with colleagues but intend to serve
as a senior judge on the Iowa Court of Appeals following retirement. I
sincerely hope that I can keep contributing to our wonderful court system for
many years."
Judge Mahan
earned his undergraduate and law degrees from Iowa State University and the
University of Iowa, respectively. After earning his law degree in 1973,
Judge Mahan joined the firm of Lindeman and Yagla in Waterloo. He later
joined the firm of Ball and Nagle in Waterloo. He also served as an
assistant Black Hawk County Attorney until his appointment to the bench in July
of 1978. He has also served as an adjunct instructor for the University of
Northern Iowa and Iowa State University.
Judge Mahan
has served as a member on several committees for the Iowa Judges Association,
was a lecturer for several years at the Iowa Bar Review School and is a member
of the Governor's Drug Policy Advisory Council. He is a member of the Iowa
State Bar Association and the Story County Bar Association and was a previous
recipient of the Judicial Achievement Award presented by the Association of
Trial Lawyers of Iowa.
Judge Mahan
and his wife, Janet, have four grown daughters and recently welcomed their
first grandchild. His wife retired in 2008 after 35 years of
teaching. They plan to travel and spend time with family.
Under Iowa
law, the vacancy that will occur upon Judge Mahan's retirement will be filled
by appointment by the Governor from a list of three nominees which will be
submitted by the State Judicial Nominating Commission. The Judicial Branch will
hold this judicial vacancy open as to reduce expenses. Legislation signed by
the governor permits the chief justice to delay, for up to 180 days, the
nominating process for any judicial officer position that becomes vacant until
June 30, 2010.
