Supreme
Court Reduces Clerk of Court Office Hours
Des
Moines, November 17, 2009—Today, the Iowa Supreme Court issued an order reducing the
hours of all clerk of court offices throughout the state. (See
Supervisory Order) This change in hours is designed to manage clerk of
court offices with staffing levels below caseload formulas. This order
comes in the wake of action by the court last week reducing the statewide
workforce of the judicial branch by 9.3%. This downsizing included the
layoff of 66 clerk of court employees, reduced hours for an additional 35 clerk
of court employees, 14 retirements and the elimination of 43 vacant clerk of
court positions.
Pursuant to today's order, twenty-three clerks of court offices
will operate on a part-time basis. The new hours for clerk of court offices in
Adams, Ringgold, Taylor and Wayne counties will begin immediately; the new
hours in the remaining 19 counties will begin December 11, 2009. All other
clerk of court offices will close to the public on Tuesday and Thursdays from
2:30 to 4:30 pm so staff has uninterrupted time to work on the backlogs caused
by the reduced workforce and ten days of scheduled unpaid leave for all judges,
magistrates and court employees. The reduced public hours for full-time clerk
of court offices will take effect December 15, 2009.
