Nominating
Commission Seeks Applicants for Iowa Court of Appeals
Des
Moines, February 16, 2010—The
State Judicial Nominating Commission is accepting applications to fill
the vacancy on the Iowa Court of Appeals that occurred when Court of
Appeals Judge Robert Mahan retired July 31, 2009.
Pursuant to legislation signed by the governor last year
permitting the Iowa Supreme Court to delay filling judicial vacancies,
this court of appeals vacancy, along with other judicial vacancies, was
held open to due to budget cuts.
The
commission will meet on March 29-30, 2010, to select three nominees to
submit to the Governor. The vacancy shall be filled by appointment
by the Governor from the list of nominees. Nominees must be residents of
the state, licensed to practice law in Iowa, and must be of such age that
they will be able to serve an initial and one regular term of office
before reaching the age of 72.
To be
most favorably considered for balloting, a candidate for nomination must
file a notice of intent to file an application with the secretary of the
commission by March 15, 2010, and submit a completed questionnaire to the
secretary of the commission and all commissioners. The completed
questionnaire must be filed with the secretary of the commission, or if
mailed it must be postmarked, on or before March 19, 2010.
Any
citizen may submit in writing to the secretary of the commission, or to
any commissioner, the names of persons for consideration as a candidate
for nomination and express views concerning such candidate.
