The Chief Justice signed an order adopting amendments to the Chapter 2 Iowa Rules of Criminal Procedure. The amendments are predominately nonsubstantive, but there are some minor substantive changes that are outlined in the order. The amended rules are temporarily adopted effective October 30, 2024, and will take permanent effect subject to legislative council review consistent with the provisions of Iowa Code section 602.4202.

The amended rule is temporarily adopted effective October 30, 2024, and will take permanent effect subject to legislative council review consistent with the provisions of Iowa Code section 602.4202.

The Iowa Supreme Court today announced its 2024-2025 adjudicative term calendar. The schedule includes special evening sessions in Des Moines, special sessions at Drake and Iowa law schools, and three special sessions in communities around the state to hear oral arguments. The adjudicative term, when the supreme court hears oral argument and writes the majority of its published opinions, is from September 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025.

The Iowa Court of Appeals filed 36 opinions on August 21, 2024.

The Iowa Court of Appeals has elected Mary Tabor, Des Moines, as chief judge. Chief Judge Tabor has served on the court of appeals since 2010. She is the eleventh chief judge since the state legislature established the Iowa Court of Appeals in 1976. She replaces Chief Judge Thomas Bower, who recently retired.

This month, In The Balance Podcast hosts Dr. Roxann Ryan. Dr. Ryan began practicing law in the Iowa Attorney General’s Criminal Appeals Division in 1980 and has been involved with numerous state agencies and legal associations.  She is also an adjunct instructor at Drake Law School, Simpson College and University of Northern Iowa.

The State Judicial Nominating Commission announced today that it has approved amendments to the State and District Judicial Nominating Commissions Uniform Rules of Procedure.     

Notice is hereby given of a vacancy in the office of Elective Judicial Nominating Commissioner for Judicial Election District 1B.  Nominating petitions are now available for individuals who wish to have their name listed on the ballot to fill serve the remainder of the term for this position, which expires on January 31, 2026.

Chief Justice Christensen has signed an order requesting public comment on proposed Iowa Rules of Electronic Search Warrant Procedure from the Electronic Search Warrants Advisory Committee. The deadline for submitting public comments is 4:30 p.m. on Monday, September 2, 2024.
