Register for an eFile Account

The rules in Chapter 16, Iowa Rules of Electronic Procedure govern the electronic filing of all documents. You can read the rules on the Iowa Legislature website at https://www.legis.iowa.gov/docs/ACO/CourtRulesChapter/16.pdf  

Notes for Attorneys and Filing Agents

  • An out-of-state attorney who desires to appear pro hac vice in an Iowa case must apply to the Office of Professional Regulation before registering for an eFile account. For more information, see Pro Hac Vice Applications | Iowa Judicial Branch (iowacourts.gov).
  • Filing agents must register for each company they represent.

Registration Instructions

  1. Open the eFile application.
  2. On the Log In page, click the Request Account button.  
  3. Accept the User Agreement. At the bottom of the page, click the radio button indicating you agree to comply with the license agreement and click Submit.  
  4. Choose your user role.  Choose Registered Filer if you are filing for yourself or your own business (sole proprietor) AND:
    1. you are not an attorney,
    2. you are not filing on behalf of a partnership, association, corporation, or tribe,
    3. you are not filing for a government agency, AND
    4. you are not a member of the media, a bail bondsman, process server, abstractor, or other specialized nonparty filer.  
      For help selecting your user role, refer to the User Role Decision Tree or Rule 16.302(1). Roles are described in detail in Rule 16.304(1).
  5. Click Next.
  6. If prompted, select your company from the Existing drop-down list.  If the organization is not listed, contact the clerk of court before adding a new company.
  7. Enter your contact information. Required fields are indicated by an asterisk *.  Each role will have different fields.  
  8. Only if you are an attorney: In the ICIS ID field, enter your AT or PHV PIN. The PIN has nine characters, including leading zeros. The PIN is assigned by the Office of Professional Regulation.   PINs for Iowa attorneys begin with a capital AT (ex. AT0001234).  PINs for pro hac vice follow the format PHV001234.
  9. Click Submit.

You should receive a confirmation message at the email addresses you specified. If you do not receive the email message, check your junk or spam folders.
