What is termination of parental rights?

Termination of parental rights ends a parent’s legal rights involving the child and may make a child eligible for adoption by others. A juvenile judge may enter an order to terminate parental rights for a number of different reasons. See Iowa Code section 232.116 and chapter 600A. These matters are complicated, and you should talk with an attorney.

What if I cannot afford an attorney for a termination of parental rights case?

If a petition to terminate parental rights is filed against a parent, the parent has a right to appointment of an attorney if the parent cannot afford an attorney.

Termination of parental rights cases are filed with the clerk of court. Termination of parental rights cases are complicated, and you should talk to an attorney. See Iowa Code chapter 600A.
