Position Summary

Assistant Ethics Counsel for the Attorney Disciplinary Board.  Eligible for State of Iowa benefits.  The anticipated start date for this position is February 3, 2020.

Responsibilities

The Assistant Ethics Counsel prosecutes cases before the Grievance Commission of the Iowa Supreme Court. This attorney also advises the Board on interpretation of the rules of professional conduct and proposed changes to the rules, and reviews and processes other disciplinary matters before the Board (including reinstatements of law licenses after suspension or revocation).  Other duties include initial review of complaints at intake, investigation of complaints, preparation of pleadings, conducting discovery, trial of cases, drafting post-hearing pleadings, and all necessary appellate litigation.  The Assistant Ethics Counsel also represents the Board in reciprocal discipline and other hearings and oral arguments before the Iowa Supreme Court.
Occasional hours outside the normal work day and overnight travel may be required.
The person in this position is appointed by Director of the Office of Professional Regulation and is subject to approval by the Iowa Supreme Court.

Requirements

Graduation from an accredited law school and admission to practice law in the State of Iowa with a law license in good standing and no significant history of discipline.  Five or more years of trial and appellate practice preferred.

Must be able to simultaneously handle multiple areas of responsibility with minimal supervision, properly prioritizing tasks and duties as dictated by changing demands.  Must be able to simultaneously advance all assigned cases in a large trial and appellate caseload.

Applicants must possess strong oral and written communication skills, and have high-level knowledge of standard office software, including word-processing and presentation software, PDF generation programs, and commercial case-management platforms.

Must be bondable; must possess high levels of personal and professional honesty and integrity, emotional maturity and stability, and a genuine interest in improving the legal profession and the administration of justice.

Must have a valid Iowa driver’s license and reliable transportation.
