Position Summary

The Iowa Judicial Branch has an opportunity for the Deputy Director of Children's Justice. This position is a new position in Children's Justice who reports to the Director of Children's Justice. This position performs highly responsible supervisory, administrative, operational, and training duties under the direction of the Director. Additionally, acts as the Director’s designee in her absence.


Supports and leads staff and contract personnel assigned to meet the federal requirements for report submission, tracking of case data, monitoring budget, providing leadership to participants in the grants, maintaining cooperative working relationships with collaborative partners, and providing information about the grant projects to the Executive Director of the Children’s Justice Program, members of the Children’s Justice Advisory Committee, and other interested parties.

Prepares statistical reports and other administrative reports as necessary.

Participates with the Director of the Iowa Children’s Justice Program in periodic review and evaluation of the progress of the grant projects. Modifies program plans as dictated by emerging needs, community differences and state or federal requirements.

Ensures staff is continuously trained in the skills needed to perform their duties in a manner consistent with current practices.

Primarily responsible for the day-to-day operations of the federal project and grant activities.

Provides support and consultation to the Regional Child Welfare Specialists and the FTC Coordinators.

Develops a positive office culture which promotes an efficient, effective workplace and positive interaction among staff. Ensures office practices are followed in accordance with Judicial Branch policy.

Maintains work hours as dictated by the needs of the program including availability for evening meetings.

Maintains records as required by state and federal regulations.

Carries out assigned duties as required to complete program activities.


The ideal candidate will have direct experience in the Iowa Children's Justice program.

Master’s Degree preferred in business administration, public administration, criminal justice, social work, or related field. 

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, criminology, sociology, psychology, and social science or related field. Coursework in basic statistics and research methods desired.

Minimum of two years’ experience in a highly responsible administrative capacity in social services, human services, public administration, or business administration. Supervisory experience preferred.
