The purpose of the Hardware Technician’s role is to support, maintain, and dispose of in-house technology equipment and IT assets. This includes installing, configuring, diagnosing, repairing, and upgrading all Iowa Judicial Branch hardware and equipment while ensuring its optimal performance. This person also troubleshoots problem areas in a timely and accurate manner and provides end-user training and assistance.
Install, configure, test, maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot end-user and network hardware, peripheral devices, printing/scanning devices, presentation equipment, and associated end-user software products.
Receive and respond to incoming calls and e-mails regarding hardware problems.
Identify and deliver required hardware service support and training to end-users and staff.
Perform on-site analysis, diagnosis, and resolution of complex hardware problems for a variety of end-users, and recommend and implement corrective solutions, including off-site repair as needed.
Document instances of hardware failure, repair, installation, and removal via the call tracking system.
Maintain an inventory of all equipment; PCs, laptops, tablets, monitors, printers, scanners, and other peripheral equipment.
Liaise with third-party support and equipment vendors.
Help develop long-term strategies and capacity planning for future hardware and technology needs.
Assist with the disposal of surplus hardware and equipment according to the approved disposal method.
Help develop business continuity and disaster recovery plans, maintain current knowledge of plan executables, and respond to crises following these plans.
Research and recommend hardware products.
Recommend, schedule, and perform hardware and peripheral equipment improvements, upgrades, and repairs.
Knowledge and Experience:
Knowledge of basic computer hardware.
Comprehensive hands-on hardware troubleshooting experience.
Working technical knowledge of current operating systems, software, and standards used by the Iowa Judicial Branch.
Hands-on experience with hardware support and maintenance of in-house technical equipment.
Hands-on experience with inventory tracking.
Exceptional customer service skills, with a focus on relationship-building, listening, and questioning. Deescalate customers, as needed.
Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Able to communicate with both technical and non-technical audiences.
Self-motivated and self-directed.
Able to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
Ability to discern when to escalate problems.
At least two years of relevant experience.
A combination of one year of relevant full-time experience and one year of education.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Education: One year of full-time experience equals thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work, preferably in business administration, public administration, or computer science.
Must have a valid State of Iowa driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Must be able to lift and transport moderately heavy to heavy objects, such as computers and peripherals.
