Position Summary

Juvenile Court Officer 1 position with the Juvenile Court Services Office for Linn Co.  May be required to travel to the additional counties of Benton, Johnson, Jones, Iowa, and Tama.


Under close supervision, the Juvenile Court Officer I handles selected matters pertaining to youth coming under the purview of Chapter 232 including intake; supervision of youth on informal probation, consent decrees and formal probation; conducts and prepares the pre-dispositional investigation reports and makes appropriate and timely recommendations to the Juvenile Court, prepare case permanency plans and other reports to the court; make recommendations to the Juvenile Court regarding a child being placed in detention/shelter; supervision of youth in out-of-home placement; youth active through interstate compact; and other duties as outlined in the casework standards.

Conducts intakes under the authority of Chapter 232 which addresses the legal sufficiency of the complaint, identifies the strengths and needs of the child and family, identifies steps to be taken to provide community safety and address the impact to the victim.  Administers the Iowa Delinquency Risk Assessment tool to inform decisions, interventions and conduct case mapping.  Train and maintain fidelity in the use of Effective Practices in Community Supervision and implement with youth on their caseload. Learns how to motivate and engage youth and families in the change process.


A Bachelor's degree from a four year college or university in law, criminal justice, criminology, sociology, or related social science.  Must possess personal integrity and emotional maturity.  Must successfully complete training requirements set by the Iowa Supreme Court.  Must possess a valid Iowa motor vehicle operator's license, unless an exception is made.

Final candidates must be able to pass a criminal background check.
