The Iowa Court of Appeals was established in 1976 with five judges. Since that time, the court has expanded to nine judges. The list below shows the composition of the court since its inception.
Janet Johnson (1978-1983)
Judge Johnson was appointed by Governor Ray in 1978 to replace Judge Allbee.
Dick R. Schlegel (1982-1994)
Judge Schlegel was appointed by Governor Ray in 1982 to replace Judge Carter.
Maynard J.V. Hayden (1983-1996)
Judge Hayden was appointed by Governor Branstad in 1983 to replace Judge Johnson.
Rosemary Shaw Sackett (1983-2012)
Judge Sackett was appointed as the sixth judge by Governor Branstad when the court expanded in 1983.
Albert L. Habhab (1987-1997)
Judge Habhab was appointed by Governor Branstad in 1987 to replace Judge Snell.
Mark S. Cady (1994-1998)
Judge Cady was appointed by Governor Branstad in 1994 to replace Judge Oxberger.
Terry L. Huitink (1994-2008)
Judge Huitink was appointed by Governor Branstad in 1994 to replace Judge Schlegel.
Michael J. Streit (1996-2001)
Judge Streit was appointed by Governor Branstad in 1996 to replace Judge Hayden.
Robert E. Mahan (1997-2009)
Judge Mahan was appointed to the bench in 1997 and replaced Judge Habhab.
Van D. Zimmer (1998-2008)
Judge Zimmer was appointed by Governor Branstad in 1998 to replace Judge Cady.
John C. Miller (1999-2009)
Judge Miller was appointed as the seventh judge by Governor Vilsack when the court expanded in 1999.
Daryl L. Hecht (1999-2006)
Judge Hecht was appointed as the eighth judge by Governor Vilsack when the court expanded in 1999.
Larry J. Eisenhauer (2001-2013)
Judge Eisenhauer was appointed by Governor Vilsack in 2001 to replace Judge Streit.
David L. Baker (2006-2008)
Judge Baker was appointed by Governor Vilsack in 2006 to replace Judge Hecht.
Edward M. Mansfield (2009-2011)
Judge Mansfield was appointed by Governor Culver in 2009 to replace Judge Huitink.
Christopher McDonald (2013-2019)
Judge McDonald was appointed by Governor Branstad in 2013 to replace Judge Eisenhauer.
