Judge Wright grew up in Fort Madison where he graduated in 1982. He attended the University of Iowa earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 1986. Judge Wright received his Juris Doctorate degree from The Law School at Drake University in 1990 and entered private practice in Fort Madison. He has worked for the Executive Office of the United States Trustee and as an assistant Lee County Attorney.
