Case No. 20-1454

Ronald Hampton
v.
Martin Marietta Materials, Inc. and Doug Robey

Ronald Hampton appeals the district court’s ruling granting appellees Martin Marietta Materials, Inc., and Doug Robey’s motion for summary judgment on his petition for wrongful discharge in violation of public policy under the Iowa Civil Rights Act (ICRA). Hampton claims the appellees retaliated against him after he submitted workers’ complaints of sexual and racial harassment against Robey’s friend and coworker, resulting in the coworker’s termination of employment. Hampton argues the district court erred in deciding no jury could find retaliation based on the court’s determination that Hampton’s protected activity had nothing to do with Martin Marietta’s decision to terminate his employment; rather, the decision to terminate Hampton was based on an independent investigation that concluded he violated a zero-tolerance safety policy.
