The State Judicial Nominating Commission, which is responsible for selecting nominees for appointment to the Iowa Court of Appeals, announced today it will begin accepting applications for the vacancy that will occur when Judge Gayle Vogel retires July 1, 2019. The Commission received notice of the vacancy from Governor Reynolds on June 12, 2019.  The Commission has sixty days to send a slate of nominees to the Governor, who makes appointments to the court. 

The justices of the Iowa Supreme Court, former colleagues, and friends remember former Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Arthur A. McGiverin today for his wisdom, fairness, and integrity during his 40 years of judicial service to the citizens of Iowa.

On Thursday, June 13, the Iowa Court of Appeals will hold a special ceremony to mark the retirement of Chief Judge Gayle Nelson Vogel. This public ceremony will be at 3:00 p.m. in the supreme court courtroom on the fourth floor of the Judicial Branch Building, 1111 E. Court Ave., Des Moines. Overflow seating will be available in the auditorium and elsewhere in the building. Chief Judge Vogel will retire July 1, 2019.

On Friday, June 7, 2019, at 3:00 p.m., Governor Kim Reynolds will administer the oath of office to Iowa Court of Appeals Judges David May and Sharon Soorholtz Greer in a public ceremony in the House Chamber of the Iowa State Capitol.

The Iowa Court of Appeals will hear oral arguments in two cases at the Lawyers Chautauqua in the Arrowwood Resort & Conference Center, 1405 Highway 71, Okoboji, Thursday, May 30, 2019, at 2:00 p.m.  The oral arguments are open to the public and the court encourages people to attend.

Juvenile Court Services has temporarily moved from the Mohawk Square Building, 22 N. Georgia Ave. Suite 101, Mason City, to the Cerro Gordo County Courthouse, 220 North Washington Avenue, Mason City, after the Mohawk Square Building roof collapsed during last weekend’s heavy rainfall. It is not known when the building will reopen to the public.

Iowans can now pay multiple fees on multiple cases with a single payment using the new shopping cart feature on Iowa Courts Online. Previously, users were required to make separate payments for each individual fine or fee.

After completing public interviews of all 30 applicants, the State Judicial Nominating Commission has selected a slate of six nominees to fill the two vacancies on the Iowa Court of Appeals.

Des Moines, Iowa—On Tuesday, April 2, and Wednesday, April 3, justices of the Iowa Supreme Court will meet with students from seven Forest City area high schools to discuss the Iowa judicial system and the role of the courts in Iowa.
