Iowa Supreme Court Recognizes Constitution Day

The Iowa Judicial Branch has joined with The Iowa State Bar Association to provide social studies teachers and students resources for studying the Iowa and US Constitutions. Coinciding with the week of Constitution Day, students can access the livestream of the oral arguments of an Iowa Supreme Court case involving both the federal and the state constitutional right against self-incrimination.

Iowa Court of Appeals to hear oral arguments at Marshalltown High School

The Iowa Court of Appeals will hear oral arguments in three cases at the Marshalltown High School, in the adjoining Marshalltown Community Auditorium at 1602 South Second Avenue, Marshalltown, September 15, 2022, at 10:00 a.m.  The oral arguments are open to the public and the court encourages people to attend.  There will be time after the arguments for questions unrelated to any pending cases before the court.

Supreme Court Announces 2022-2023 Adjudicative Term, including Special Sessions

The Iowa Supreme Court today announced its 2022-2023 adjudicative term calendar, including a special evening session in Des Moines, special sessions at Drake and Iowa law schools, and two special sessions in communities around the state to hear oral arguments. The court's adjudicative term is from September 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023.

Judicial Nominating Commission begins process for selecting nominees for Court of Appeals vacancy

The State Judicial Nominating Commission, which is responsible for selecting nominees for appointment to the Iowa Court of Appeals, announced today it will begin accepting applications for the vacancy on the court that arose due to the appointment of David May to the Iowa Supreme Court. The Commission received notice of the vacancy from Governor Reynolds on August 19, 2022. The Commission has sixty days to send a slate of nominees to the Governor, who makes appointments to the court.

Supreme Court Approves Grants to Support Civil Legal Services for Low-Income Iowans

The Iowa Supreme Court has approved $241,373.17 in grants to non-profit programs that provide legal assistance to low-income Iowans with civil legal problems. The court awarded grants to eleven different organizations throughout Iowa. The grants are funded by the Interest on Lawyers' Trust Account (IOLTA) program. With this year's grants, the supreme court has awarded more than $25 million in IOLTA grants since the program began on July 1, 1985.
