**If you can't attend the Iowa skills test, please note that Iowa also recognizes the NCRA's RPR designation. So if you pass their skill test and written test, all you will need to do is take the Iowa Written Test to become licensed in the State of Iowa. The NCRA has on-going, on-line testing at their website.

Exam: Saturday, September 19, 8:00 a.m. (Judicial Branch Building opens at 7:30 a.m.; Registration begins at 8:00 a.m., closes at 8:30 a.m.)


All meetings of the Board of Examiners of Shorthand Reporters are accessible to anyone.  If you need special accommodations to participate, please call (515) 348-4670 for assistance (TDD: Relay Iowa TTY at 800-735-2942) at least five (5) business days before the meeting.


Members of the public wishing to have discussion with the board at the meeting should request permission to be on the agenda by emailing  on or before September 16, 2020. Any members of the public wishing to address the board without discussion may speak at the discretion of the chair for a period not to exceed two minutes.  The board reserves the right to reduce this time based on the number of people wishing to speak.


Some portions of board meetings may be closed to discuss licensee disciplinary investigations or proceedings in accordance with Iowa Code sections 21.5(1)(a) or (d) and Iowa Code section 272C.6(4).

Court Rules Governing Certification

Rules pertaining to certified shorthand reporters now appear at chapter 46 of the Iowa Court Rules. Fees payable with respect to reports and several kinds of applications were changed in 2008. The complete chapter 46 is available here: Chapter 46 (PDF)
